Skin masses are common in horse and can have a huge range of causes, however, the most common are classified as melanomas and sarcoids. Lumps and bumps are both unpredictable and varying, with each of them developing at different rates. If left untreated, some can become ulcerated and cause complications. When the lump is small and treated quickly, they are less difficult to remove, so we always advise to act promptly.

We are fortunate to have an oncology expert as our Lead Vet. Katie Snalune is an RCVS Recognised and EBVS European Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine and a RCVS Certificate Holder in Equine Soft Tissue Surgery. She is one of the authors of the only textbook ever published on Equine Cancer Medicine alongside the famous Professor Derek Knottenbelt, and spends a large proportion of her clinical time seeing first and second opinion cases and referral cases for cancer medicine. Melanomas and Sarcoids are forms of cancer, and acting promptly and taking expert medical advice is in your horse, pony or donkey's best interests.

We offer lump removals (small to medium in size). The removal will be carried out at our hospital by our Internal Medicine specialist and RCVS Certificate Holder in Equine Soft Tissue Surgery. We encourage early booking to avoid disappointment.

Owners will be required to send in a photograph at the time of booking so that we are able to accurately price the cost of treatment. Pre-clinic dermatological assessments may be necessary at your yard to advise on best forms of treatment options available to you and your horse. Prices range from £550 to £1500. Most lumps will be removed under standing sedation, and will fall into the lower price range, more complex removals may require a general anaesthetic due to size, location and temperament and thesevarying reasons will be discussed with you upon booking.
